Chances are, you'll find things different here...
You’ll know every person in the school — not just those in your own grade. Your teachers will feel like family. If you walk to school, you’ll come through the streets of a small town to arrive at a little school on a quiet leafy street just as someone steps out to ring a hand bell; class is starting. There will be potlucks with parents, students and teachers where someone is playing music in the corner and several people are gumboot dancing. Sometimes, the whole school will go play in the mountains and on the ocean together.
But Island Oak is not just a place to feel at home...
You’ll find your thinking getting clearer, more independent, and more confident. You’ll discover the breadth and depth of human wisdom and culture, and a growing sensitivity, respect, and understanding for all forms of life. You'll develop the characteristics of a responsible leader and you’ll prepare for the next step; college or university, work, or travel. At Island Oak, you’ll find yourself recognized and valued as an individual.
“Good time doing equations during math lessons with Gary, the best math and sciences teacher I ever had, good time with Richard that made social studies interesting to me for the first time. Good time in the office, during French lessons, playing basketball or writing songs and playing guitar, so nice I will never forget...”

Learn another language and culture…overseas!
Many of our local Island Oak Grade 10 and 11 students attend a Waldorf school overseas through our exchange program. Exchange partners spend half a year at Island Oak High School and the other half at the international Waldorf School together, and usually there are no extra tuition fees.

“The most rewarding experience was going on exchange to France and the opportunity to travel outside our small Waldorf community and look upon the broader world...”

Have a look at our application process and fill out an application (see downloads on this page). We accept students based on our capacity to meet the student’s needs, the student’s ability to learn in a group, and the family’s willingness to support Waldorf education by providing an appropriate, healthy and nurturing home life. We also review previous school records and evaluations, and conduct personal interviews and a mathematics assessment. (See downloads for application and application process below.)
